Summer Poetry Exhibition Blooms at Tallinn & Tartu Botanic Gardens
The Estonian Poetry Society has launched a summer exhibition titled “Voices in Bloom” at the Tallinn Botanic Garden and Tartu Botanic Park, featuring works by 25 contemporary poets, according to a statement released June 12. The showcase, open daily through August 31, includes interactive installations and poetry readings scheduled weekly, as reported by The Baltic Times.
The exhibition was organized in collaboration with the Estonian Cultural Foundation, which allocated €150,000 in funding for the project, confirmed by a spokesperson for the foundation. The initiative aims to “bridge nature and literary expression,” according to the society’s director, Kristjan Pärn, who noted that 18 of the participating poets are based in Estonia while seven are international contributors from Germany, Sweden, and Canada.
Visitors can access the Tallinn site via a 15-minute tram ride from the city center, while Tartu’s location is within walking distance of the university campus. Both venues have implemented timed entry slots to manage attendance, a measure approved by local health authorities. The exhibition’s curator, Liina Kask, stated that the works “reflect themes of ecological resilience and urban identity,” citing a poem by German poet Anna Meier displayed at Tallinn’s entrance that references the city’s 13th-century founding.
Local media outlets have highlighted the event as part of a broader cultural push by Estonian institutions to boost tourism during the summer months. The Tallinn Botanic Garden reported a 22% increase in visitor numbers compared to the same period in 2022, according to its annual report. Meanwhile, Tartu’s park, which houses one of the oldest botanical collections in the Baltic region, has seen renewed interest after a 2023 renovation of its historic glasshouses.
The exhibition’s programming includes a panel discussion on June 28 featuring poets and environmental scientists, co-sponsored by the Estonian Academy of Sciences. A separate workshop for school groups, focused on nature-themed poetry, is scheduled for July 15. Both events are free but require registration through the organizers’ website.
The Estonian Poetry Society has not yet responded to requests for additional details about the selection process for participating poets. However, a preliminary list of contributors was published in the June 5 edition of the newspaper Eesti Ekspress, which noted that 12 of the poets are affiliated with universities in Estonia or Finland.
Visitors planning to attend are advised to check the exhibition’s official website for real-time updates on event schedules and any changes to admission policies. The Tallinn site will host a final poetry night on August 25, featuring live performances by all 25 participating poets.
