Summer creek Edges Katy in Thrilling 6A Division 2 Playoff Finish
KATY, TX – Summer Creek defeated Katy 38-37 in a back-and-forth Texas high school football 6A Division 2 playoff game Friday night, securing a hard-fought victory in a contest decided in the final seconds. The Bulldogs’ late touchdown proved to be the difference,overcoming a late Katy score and a blocked PAT.
The game, a showcase of offensive firepower, saw multiple lead changes throughout the fourth quarter alone. This win propels summer Creek further into the playoffs, while katy’s season concludes after a competitive showing.The result impacts the regional standings and sets the stage for Summer Creek’s next challenge as they continue their pursuit of a state championship.
The fourth quarter began with a 31-yard field goal from Giovanni Moreno,tying the game at 31-31 with 6:45 remaining. Summer Creek afterward failed to convert on a fourth-down attempt, but a timely Katy timeout granted the Bulldogs another opportunity. Katy’s defense then rose to the occasion, stopping a quarterback run on 4th-and-1 and taking possession at their own 34-yard line with 4:15 left in the game.
Capitalizing on the turnover, Katy swiftly marched down the field, culminating in a touchdown pass from Hartwell to a wide-open Drake Hopkins after a successful play-action fake at the 2:00 mark.However, Summer Creek blocked the ensuing PAT, leaving the score at 37-31 in favor of Katy.
With just one minute remaining and three timeouts, Summer Creek drove into Katy territory. Facing 4th-and-8, quarterback Spinks connected with Trenton Thomas for a touchdown, and Cleveland successfully converted the PAT, giving the Bulldogs a 38-37 lead with only 17 seconds left on the clock.
