SUFFOLK, Va. – A 9-year-old Suffolk boy undergoing leukemia treatment received a heartwarming surprise Saturday: a brand new playset built in his backyard. The gift was made possible through a collaboration between the Roc Solid Foundation and the Chartway Promise Foundation, providing a safe outdoor space for play during his health journey.
L.J. was the recipient of the specially constructed playground, designed to allow him to enjoy time outdoors while receiving treatment. The build is part of a month-long series of events held by Chartway and its partners to recognize Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and celebrate the Chartway Promise Foundation’s 20th anniversary.
“This year, we’re not just recognizing Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re also celebrating two decades of community impact,” said Brian Schools, president and CEO of Chartway Credit Union. “the work our Foundation has done has changed countless lives, and we’re proud to continue growing that impact.”
Christine Wilson, president of the Chartway Promise Foundation, emphasized the meaning of these playsets. “Observing Childhood Cancer Awareness Month during our 20th anniversary is especially meaningful,” Wilson said. “It’s a time to honor these brave children and reflect on two decades of bringing memorable experiences to those facing some of life’s most challenging moments.”
The playset reveal in Suffolk is one of several initiatives taking place across Virginia, Utah, and texas throughout September. other activities include playhouse assemblies, packing hospital support bags, “Promise Hero” wish reveals, and community fundraising events.
Since its inception, the Chartway Promise Foundation has distributed $16 million in grants to nearly 50 charitable organizations. This year’s Childhood Cancer Awareness Month fundraising efforts have already yielded $300,000, contributing to a record-breaking $1.1 million in total grants awarded to 25 partners in 2024.
