Rising Cardiac Arrests in Young Adults Raise Health Concerns in Andhra Pradesh
Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh – A disturbing trend of sudden cardiac deaths among young people in Andhra Pradesh is prompting urgent calls for increased awareness, preventative care, and comprehensive health screenings. Recent months have seen a series of tragic incidents involving individuals with no known prior health conditions, sparking concern among medical professionals and the public alike.
The cases span a diverse demographic, from students to working professionals. In January, 28-year-old Kommalapati Saikumar, a software engineer from Angaluru in Krishna district, tragically died after collapsing during a cricket game. Just last month, on May 6th, Pavan Kumar, 35, was found deceased in his room in Madhura Nagar, with cardiac arrest listed as the cause of death.
The impact isn’t limited to working adults. A 15-year-old girl in Korrapadu, Kadapa, succumbed to sudden cardiac arrest shortly after completing her SSC exam on March 19th. Similar incidents have been reported in Palnadu, where a 17-year-old died last year, and in Maheshwaram, Hyderabad, where a young tech professional collapsed while exercising.
Dr. Lakshmi Navya, a Consultant Cardiologist at Manipal Hospitals in Vijayawada, explains that sudden cardiac death is defined as the abrupt cessation of all life activities within one hour, frequently resulting from severe heart attacks or hazardous heart rhythm abnormalities known as ventricular arrhythmias.
“While some cases are linked to genetic predispositions,” Dr. Navya stated, “a significant number are attributable to lifestyle factors – including smoking, chronic stress, insufficient sleep, and a poor diet.”
Medical experts emphasize the interplay between factors individuals can’t change, such as hereditary lipid disorders, and those they can control, like hypertension, obesity, and unhealthy lifestyle choices. The increasing frequency of these events is no longer considered a series of isolated incidents, but rather a worrying escalation of a public health issue.
“the fact that young, seemingly healthy individuals are collapsing during everyday activities is a stark warning,” Dr. Navya emphasized. “This underscores the critical need for regular cardiac screenings, increased public awareness regarding risk factors, and a proactive approach to preventative healthcare.”
