Subnautica 2 Early Access Sales Reach 4 Million in 5 Days

May 21, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Unknown Worlds Entertainment announced that Subnautica 2 has surpassed 4 million copies sold globally within five days of its release into early access. The underwater survival sequel, which launched on May 14, 2026, reached the milestone following a rapid initial sales period that saw the title cross 2 million copies sold in its first 12 hours.

The game’s entry into the market has been accompanied by significant player engagement, with reports indicating a peak of 651,000 concurrent players across Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox platforms. Despite the commercial performance, the title has become a focal point for internal community debate regarding specific gameplay mechanics, particularly the inclusion and behavior of certain aquatic creatures.

Developmental choices have also drawn public responses from the studio. In addressing player feedback regarding the absence of traditional combat weapons in the game, representatives from the development team indicated that the design philosophy prioritizes the survival experience over aggressive tactical engagement, contrasting the game’s mechanics with more combat-oriented survival titles.

The launch has also been marked by administrative friction between the developers and portions of the user base. In a recent instance, a player contacted official support seeking assistance with a pirated copy of the software. The interaction resulted in a public acknowledgement from the developers, who expressed disappointment regarding the unauthorized distribution and usage of the game.

The current state of Subnautica 2 follows a period of institutional restructuring. While Krafton previously served as the publisher for the project, legal developments—including the reinstatement of leadership and the subsequent shifting of publishing rights—have established Unknown Worlds Entertainment as the current publisher. The legal proceedings concerning the studio’s internal management remain ongoing.
