Subhash Tamang to become first Nepali golfer in DP World Tour event

October 13, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Subhash Tamang, a 24-year-old golfer from Lalitpur, Nepal, will become the first player from his nation to compete in a DP World Tour event when he tees off at the DP World India Championship on Thursday, Hindustan Times reported.

From brick-laying to professional golf

Tamang’s path to the professional circuit began in unconventional circumstances. At age 11, he worked laying mud bricks to support his family. His introduction to the sport occurred while he was in Kathmandu to babysit his cousin, who worked as a ballboy at the Royal Nepal Golf Club. Upon visiting the course to deliver a meal, Tamang developed an interest in the game. His development was later supported by members of the Royal Nepal Golf Club and, more recently, by the Tarun Sardesai Golf Academy in Bengaluru.

Goals for the DP World India Championship

Standing 5 feet 5 inches and weighing 55 kilograms, Tamang enters the championship as a professional competitor after previously becoming the first Nepali amateur to reach the top 100 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. He views this week as an opportunity to observe the preparation habits of top-tier players like Rory McIlroy. Tamang stated that his primary objective is to maintain consistency across all four rounds, aiming for a steady score of 2-under par each day. He noted that his recent performances have often lacked the necessary consistency, with high-scoring rounds frequently following strong starts.

DP World-PGTI Tour Helps Tamang Support Nepal

Tamang attributes much of his professional growth to the guidance of Tarun Sardesai and the competitive environment provided by the DP World-PGTI Tour. He emphasized that the tour has provided a necessary platform for players from Nepal and surrounding nations to compete at a higher level. Beyond his personal goals, Tamang expressed a desire to perform well to provide a sense of positivity for his home country, which has recently faced challenges due to flash flooding.

Tamang Becomes First Nepali Athlete in Tour Event

Tamang will compete in the field alongside fellow golfers Manoj S and Mohammed Azhar. His debut marks the first time a Nepali athlete has participated in this specific tour event.
