Stuck on the Same Mobile Plan? You Could Be Overpaying

by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Belgian mobile subscribers who have maintained the same contract for two to five years are significantly overpaying for their services, according to a recent report highlighted by Het Laatste Nieuws (HLN).

The analysis, prompted by concerns over consumer costs, indicates that long-term loyalty is not being rewarded by telecom providers. While promotional offers and bundled packages are frequently available to new customers, existing subscribers often continue to pay higher rates.

HLN reports that current promotions include opportunities to acquire smartphones – such as iPhones and Samsung Galaxy models – for as little as €1 with a new subscription. Tablets, including iPads and Samsung Galaxy devices, are also available from €1. Other incentives include a Nintendo Switch Lite for €1 and a Domo Roomijsmachine offered at the same price point. A Domo Air Fryer is also being offered as a promotional item. A Sonos Speaker can be obtained for just €1 with a new HLN subscription.

The newspaper notes that these offers extend beyond hardware, with some subscribers receiving several months of free service. Special discounts are also available for students, individuals aged 65 and over, and teachers. Competitions offering vacation prizes further add to the incentives.

HLN provides resources for subscribers seeking assistance, including an online FAQ section and a contact form. Customer service is available by phone at 02 454 25 90, and the delivery service can be reached at 02 490 11 00. Both services operate between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM on weekdays, with the delivery service also available on Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

The report comes as consumers increasingly explore options for bundled telecom packages, including combinations of mobile, internet, television, and fixed-line services, as highlighted by Mijnvergelijker.be. The availability of these bundled options adds complexity to the market, making it more demanding for consumers to assess the true cost of their services.

HLN also offers a digital app and e-paper version of the newspaper, providing subscribers with access to articles on tablets, smartphones, and computers, with the option to download content for offline reading. A comparison guide is available to help subscribers decide between HLN and De Morgen.
