Strategy Holds $52.5 Billion in Net Bitcoin Reserves After Adjustments

September 5, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

This adjusted figure highlights a significant corporate shift toward transparent balance-sheet disclosures for common equity holders.

The gross scale of the asset accumulation remains much larger. Per reporting from Crypto Briefing, the enterprise controls roughly 845,050 BTC valued near $74 billion. This total amounts to approximately 4.02% of the entire circulating supply of Bitcoin.

The Mechanics of Net Exposure Reporting

The revised reporting methodology rolled out in July 2026 establishes a framework prioritizing net exposure for common shareholders. Instead of focusing solely on the gross Bitcoin stack, the company deducts claims sitting higher in the corporate capital structure.

Preferred stock obligations account for roughly $14.8 billion to $15.5 billion of senior claims. Out-of-the-money convertible debt accounts for another $6.7 billion to $6.8 billion. Subtracting these obligations from the $74 billion gross asset valuation produces the finalized $52.5 billion net reserve figure.

Executive Chairman Michael Saylor championed this accounting shift. The framework aims to show investors what actually belongs to common equity once all senior obligations are settled in a theoretical liquidation scenario. That separation represents a $21.5 billion cushion of senior claims.

Liquidity Buffers and Corporate Strategy

Beyond digital assets, the firm maintains substantial fiat liquidity reserves. According to Crypto Briefing, the balance sheet lists a USD reserve of $5.1 billion paired with an additional cash pool of roughly $1.6 billion. This combined cash position provides enough coverage for preferred dividends and interest obligations over several years without liquidating any Bitcoin holdings.

Recent weeks show a distinct pause in open-market Bitcoin acquisitions. Management instead directed capital toward MSTR share sales and limited preferred stock buybacks. This dual-purpose maneuver reduces senior claims ahead of common shareholders while keeping the core asset stack untouched.

Valuation Metrics and Equity Dilution Thresholds

To evaluate common stock value under the new framework, the company introduced a market net asset value metric known as mNAV. Since its rollout, mNAV has consistently remained above the 1.0x threshold.

Management permanently anchored its equity issuance threshold at that 1.0x level. This policy ensures the company will not dilute existing shareholders by issuing stock below the net asset value of its underlying Bitcoin holdings.

The roughly $6.7 billion in convertible debt remains out-of-the-money, meaning conversion prices sit higher than current MSTR share prices. If market shifts push those converts into the money, the resulting dilution math would alter the net reserve calculation.

Assessing true common shareholder value requires looking past gross asset accumulations to examine the senior claims waiting in line.
