Stolen Corvette Found Damaged: Insurance & Carjacking Nightmare
A Virginia man’s dream car was turned into a “repair nightmare” after being stolen and vandalized, according to reporting from local news outlet ABC 8News. Keith Kunze, of Henrico County, discovered his 2017 C7 Corvette was missing from outside his apartment on October 19, 2025.
Kunze recounted purchasing the vehicle as a birthday gift to himself after returning from a deployment in Afghanistan. He described the car as having a specific aesthetic: “black inside, black outside, black rims,” with a removable top and manual transmission. The Richmond Police Department later located the Corvette in the Scott’s Addition neighborhood, less than 10 miles away, but it had sustained significant damage.
The vehicle had been covered in raw eggs, its roof was missing, and various parts were destroyed. “I’m still having a hard time wrapping my head around it since it’s…so much damage,” Kunze told ABC 8News.
The incident raises questions about insurance coverage in cases of carjacking and vandalism. Comprehensive car insurance policies typically cover theft and related damage, including vandalism, if the vehicle is recovered. But, coverage for customizations can be limited. According to Progressive, comprehensive coverage insures up to $1,000 in repairs and custom parts, with additional coverage available through custom parts and equipment (CPE) policies. Kunze stated he invested $20,000 in repairs and customizations over three months, suggesting he may not have had sufficient CPE coverage.
Whereas Kunze had surveillance footage documenting two masked suspects abandoning the vehicle, the perpetrators remain at large. Insurance will cover a portion of the repairs, but the emotional toll of the damage is not financially compensated.
