SAN FRANCISCO – Steve Perry, the iconic former lead singer of Journey, definitively stated Thursday night that he will not participate in the band’s upcoming “Final Frontier” farewell tour, effectively ending months of speculation fueled by comments from bandmates. Perry’s announcement, delivered via a post on his official X account, comes after keyboardist Jonathan Cain suggested in a recent interview that discussions with Perry were ongoing and that a reunion hadn’t been entirely dismissed.
“The rumors about me rejoining the band are simply not true, and I want to gently put them to rest,” Perry wrote. He acknowledged the enduring appeal of Journey’s music, stating, “I completely understand why people would hope for that. The music we created together means a great deal to me too.” However, Perry emphasized his commitment to new creative endeavors, adding, “But I’m continuing to explore new creative work and really enjoy working on new music that reflects where I am today.”
The announcement closes a chapter on a potential reunion that captivated fans for weeks. Cain’s comments, reported earlier this month, had ignited hope among Journey enthusiasts, particularly given the tour’s billing as a final farewell. Cain had told sources that Perry “didn’t say no — leave it at that,” a statement that Perry’s camp now clarifies was not indicative of serious negotiations.
Perry’s departure from Journey in the late 1980s remains a subject of discussion among music historians. Even as the band continued with a series of vocalists, including current frontman Arnel Pineda, Perry’s voice is inextricably linked to Journey’s signature sound, responsible for hits like “Don’t Stop Believin’” and “Open Arms.” His solo career following his exit from Journey saw moderate success, but he largely remained out of the public eye for decades before returning to recording and performing in the 2010s.
The current Journey lineup – featuring Cain, guitarist Neal Schon, Pineda, keyboardist-vocalist Jason Derlatka, drummer-vocalist Deen Castronovo, and bassist Todd Jensen – will proceed as planned with the “Final Frontier” tour. Schon, a founding member of Journey, has collaborated with a diverse range of artists throughout his career, including work with Jan Hammer as the duo Schon & Hammer, releasing albums like Untold Passion and Here to Stay, the latter of which included a song co-written with Perry and Cain, “Self-Defense” (American Songwriter). He likewise co-wrote “Desert Moon” for Journey frontman Steve Augeri’s album, Seven Ways ’til Sunday, in 2022.
Despite these collaborations, a significant musical partnership outside of Journey between Schon and Perry remained limited to “Self-Defense.” Perry’s decision to focus on his own creative path leaves the future of any further collaboration uncertain, and Journey fans will now watch the “Final Frontier” tour unfold without the voice that defined a generation.
