Steps Netflix Movie: Release Date, Cast, and Plot Details

July 9, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Netflix will release Steps, a Cinderella spin-off animated feature film, on November 20, 2026. The movie shifts focus to Cinderella’s stepsisters, specifically Lilith and Margot, as they attempt to navigate a kingdom seized by the antagonist Priscilla. The film will stream globally on the Netflix platform.

Steps represents the studio's first true feature-length project to be completed from start to finish within the studio's Sydney and Vancouver hubs. By targeting a late November release, Netflix is positioning the film as a primary viewing option for families during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday corridors.

The Plot: A Subversion of the Perrault Narrative

The film departs from the traditional Charles Perrault foundation. According to the official synopsis, the story begins when Lilith, the rebellious stepsister, steals the Fairy Godmother’s magic wand to secure entry to the Royal Ball for herself and her sister, Margot. This act of theft triggers a nightmare when Margot is magically transformed by mistake, and the kingdom is taken over by the wicked scheming Priscilla.

The narrative forces an unlikely alliance. Lilith must partner with Cinderella—depicted here as an active and adventurous princess—to combat biker trolls and survive the “Screaming Woods.” Director Alyce Tzue stated that the film incorporates personal elements from her own experiences as an outsider, framing the story as a journey of acceptance and the restoration of a broken sisterly bond.

Production Design and the ‘Rococo-Punk’ Aesthetic

Industry attendees at the June 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival were given a first look at the film’s visual direction. The production employs a “Rococo-meets-punk-rock” visual style, blending 18th-century opulence with a Y2K aesthetic.

STEPS (2026): NEW OFFICIAL LOOK | Netflix

The creative team behind the film includes a dense layer of established talent:

  • Direction: Alyce Tzue (making her feature debut) and co-director John Ripa, known for Raya and the Last Dragon.
  • Production: Amy Poehler via Paper Kite Productions, alongside Jane Hartwell and Kim Lessing.
  • Music: The duo Garfunkel & Oates, who are producing a soundtrack described as catchy and humorous.
  • Writing: A collaborative screenplay by Ava Tramer, James Madejski, Jen Chuck, Dana Schwartz, Felicia Ho, Riki Lindhome, and Kate Micucci.

Cast and Character Breakdown

The voice cast combines comedic heavyweights with established cinematic actors to drive the film’s emotional and humorous beats. According to Animation World Network, the primary roles are distributed as follows:

Cast and Character Breakdown
Actor Character Role Description
Ali Wong Lilith The quick-witted, rebellious catalyst of the chaos.
Stephanie Hsu Margot Lilith’s sister, providing both comedy and curiosity.
Amanda Seyfried Cinderella An adventurous and active version of the princess.
Bette Midler Fairy Godmother A bumbling, legendary figure providing comedic relief.
Nikki Glaser Priscilla The main antagonist and usurper of the kingdom.

Release Logistics and Accessibility

Netflix has confirmed that Steps is a standalone feature film, not a television series. The film will be available in multiple languages with full subtitles and audio descriptions to ensure global accessibility.

There is currently no public trailer. While fan-made videos are circulating on YouTube, the official teaser is expected by October 2026, though it may arrive sooner. Netflix requires a paid subscription for ad-free viewing. Users seeking alternatives are cautioned that free streaming sites often carry significant privacy and security risks.

With the production spanning both Sydney and Vancouver, the project underscores the globalization of animation pipelines.

Whether Steps can successfully redefine the “evil stepsister” trope remains to be seen, but the combination of a Y2K aesthetic and a cast led by Ali Wong suggests a calculated attempt to capture both nostalgic adults and younger audiences.
