LIV Golf Pursues Official World Golf Ranking Points

LIV Golf is actively seeking inclusion in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) system. The application is under review, potentially reshaping the landscape of professional golf and major championship eligibility.

LIV Golf’s Perspective

Scott O’Neil, CEO of LIV Golf, issued a statement regarding the application process, expressing gratitude to OWGR Chairman Trevor Immelman. O’Neil emphasized a collaborative approach:

We thank OWGR Chairman Trevor Immelman for his continued leadership and willingness to move the sport of golf forward for the benefit of all players and most importantly, the fans. LIV Golf is committed to working together with the Official World Golf Ranking and its board to ensure the very best players are competing in the game’s most prestigious events. We are confident our application addresses the outstanding questions that exist to support a more global, all-encompassing, and accurate ranking system. We are hopeful the review and approval process can progress ahead of the 2026 major season.

Implications for Golf

The OWGR’s decision could significantly impact player eligibility for major tournaments. Currently, golfers can earn ranking points on the PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and other circuits, while LIV Golf events do not award these points. As of December 2023, only 13 LIV golfers remained ranked in the top 100 (Golf Channel).
