State Government and Telethon Fund Million for Child Health

State Government and Telethon Fund $3 Million for Child Health

October 15, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Five research projects targeting infant health, pediatric cancer, and surgical complications have secured nearly $3 million in combined funding from the State Government and the Channel 7 Telethon Trust.

    Key Clinical Takeaways:

  • Acute Myeloid Leukaemia and sarcoma immunotherapy developments receive state backing.
  • Clinical trials will examine maternal pertussis vaccination timing and pediatric airway management during surgery.
  • Research teams across The University of Western Australia’s Medical School and The Kids Institute Australia share the grant allocation.

Funding Allocation for Pediatric Cancer and Surgical Safety

The financial backing supports distinct investigations into childhood diseases and surgical care led by researchers at The University of Western Australia’s Medical School and The Kids Institute Australia. Dr. Sebastien Malinge received funding to accelerate immunotherapy development for children with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. Using models of childhood AML, the research examines how the leukemia interacts with developing immune systems to isolate safer therapeutic pathways.

Associate Professor Joost Lesterhuis secured support for pediatric sarcoma immunotherapy. The project focuses on next-generation targeted immunotherapies designed to engage the patient’s immune system for sustained activity against tumor cells. Alongside these oncology initiatives, Dr. Omar Elaskalani obtained funding to investigate gentler immunotherapy approaches aimed at preventing immune cell exhaustion during prolonged cancer treatments.

Maternal Immunization and Surgical Trials

Infant protection forms another core focus of the newly funded slate. Professor Peter Richmond leads a trial evaluating maternal pertussis immunisation strategies. The research measures whether altering vaccine administration timing during pregnancy enhances antibody transfer to protect infants against whooping cough during their first months of life.

In the surgical sector, Professor Britta von Ungern-Sternberg secured resources for a multicentre, international randomized controlled trial. The study evaluates whether modifications to airway management techniques during pediatric operations decrease breathing complications.
