Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 – Experimentation & Classic Episodes Planned
Production has wrapped on the fifth and final season of Paramount+’s Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, ahead of its planned 2027 premiere, with the show’s fourth season slated to arrive this summer.
The series, a prequel to the original Star Trek focusing on the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) and the crew of the USS Enterprise a decade before Captain Kirk’s command, has distinguished itself through a willingness to experiment with format and tone. Season two featured a crossover episode with the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks and a full-fledged musical installment, both of which were well-received by audiences.
However, the show’s third season saw a more mixed reaction to episodes that deviated from the traditional Star Trek formula. A holodeck-based murder mystery and an episode presented in a documentary style proved particularly divisive among viewers, leading to a less enthusiastic reception overall.
Co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers addressed the creative direction of the upcoming fourth season in a recent interview with TrekMovie, explaining that the production team initially operated under the uncertainty of whether the show would be renewed for a fifth season. This prompted a deliberate effort to explore uncharted territory within the Star Trek universe.
“We looked at season 4 and we didn’t know what our future was going to be, so we were like, ‘What are things that we have never tried that we want to try?’ What is Star Trek that hasn’t been done that we could do?” Myers said. “Like, the whole point of doing Strange New Worlds is to visit some strange new worlds. Every one of the episodes is strange, new, and different. We want to try some things with Star Trek that is familiar to Star Trek lovers, but also, fresh, new, different, explosive – we just want to go for something.”
Despite this push for innovation, Myers emphasized that the show will maintain a balance between experimental episodes and more conventional Star Trek storytelling. He revealed that the fourth season will include a puppet-focused episode alongside episodes that adhere to a more classic format.
“It’s not like every episode is a puppet episode… It’s a mix,” Myers stated. “We have a few genre reaches. We have some real classic episodes, some highly, very classic episodes. We try some things that have not been tried in Star Trek before, but still very much at their core, feel like Star Trek.”
The fourth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is expected to consist of ten episodes, although the final season will be shorter, with six episodes. Paramount+ has not yet announced a specific premiere date for the fourth season. The final season will also feature the introduction of Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, played by Thomas Jane, and Hikaru Sulu, played by Kai Murakami, completing the classic Enterprise crew as seen in Star Trek: The Original Series.
