Star Citizen Hits $1 Billion in Funding as Squadron 42 Nears Completion

May 25, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Cloud Imperium Games announced that its long-awaited space simulation title Star Citizen has entered the final stages of development for its single-player campaign, Squadron 42, as the project surpasses $1 billion in crowdfunding. The milestone, first reported by 4Gamers, marks a significant phase in the game’s decade-long development cycle, which has drawn both fervent support and scrutiny from players and industry observers.

The studio confirmed that Squadron 42, a narrative-driven campaign set in the game’s fictional universe, is now in its “final development phase,” according to the 4Gamers report. This follows years of iterative updates and alpha testing, during which the game’s playable content has expanded substantially. The announcement coincides with the ongoing Star Citizen DefenseCon event, a virtual convention that grants players temporary access to high-end in-game assets, including 100 ships available for 48-hour loans.

Star Citizen Hits Cloud Imperium Games

Cloud Imperium Games has maintained a transparent approach to its funding model, relying entirely on player contributions rather than traditional publishing deals. The $1 billion threshold, first reached in late 2023, has been a focal point of the project’s public communications. During the current DefenseCon event, the game is offering free-to-play access until May 27, 2026, allowing new and returning players to experience its open-world mechanics and fleet combat systems.

The studio’s decision to extend free access aligns with its strategy of balancing community engagement with financial sustainability. A 2024 update to Star Citizen included a “game wipe” to address economic exploits, which the developers described as necessary to preserve the integrity of the game’s virtual economy. This move, while controversial among some players, was framed as a step toward long-term stability.

Despite the funding success, questions about the project’s timeline persist. Cloud Imperium Games has yet to provide a definitive release date for Squadron 42, though the studio’s CEO, Chris Roberts, has emphasized that the campaign will be “fully realized” before the game’s broader multiplayer components are finalized. The next major development update is scheduled for late June 2026, according to the studio’s public roadmap.

As Star Citizen continues its journey toward completion, the game’s blend of crowdfunding, iterative development, and ambitious scope remains a subject of fascination in the gaming industry. The upcoming free-to-play period and the finalization of Squadron 42 are seen as critical tests of the project’s ability to deliver on its promises while maintaining player trust.
