Ståle Solbakken defends live TV announcement on Nyland benching
Following a 1-2 defeat against Wales in Cardiff on October 2, 2026, Norway manager Stale Solbakken revealed on live television that goalkeeper Orjan Nyland would be benched for the upcoming match against Portugal in favor of Egil Selvik.
Stale Solbakken Defends Live TV Revelation and Squad Management
The decision to bypass traditional player briefings caught both the squad and observers off guard. Solbakken defended his choice during a Friday morning press conference, explaining that he had privately informed Selvik before a team meeting that he would start against Portugal regardless of the outcome in Cardiff, delivering the message: Uansett om vi vinner 10-0 eller taper 10-0 mot Wales, står du mot Portugal.
Captain Martin Odegaard confirmed to reporters that he had no prior knowledge of the managerial switch, noting that Solbakken makes his own choices. TV 2 pundit Morten Langli criticized the maneuver as unusual leadership, prompting Solbakken to dismiss the critique by stating that Langli breeds trotting horses while he manages human beings. Solbakken admitted regarding the broadcast revelation, Det er det ikke sikkert jeg burde gjort,
adding that he let the cat out of the bag so everyone could be done with the discussion.
Contrasting Press Reactions and Goalkeeping Performance Under Scrutiny
Media outlets differed sharply in how they evaluated the goalkeeper situation. Solbakken maintained Nyland played a solid match despite failing to stop a decisive free-kick from Neco Williams, other outlets emphasized mounting defensive vulnerabilities. Pundit Kristoffer Lokberg asserted that Nyland should have saved the set-piece, stating bluntly that the goalkeeper should take the free-kick. Nyland had previously experienced a troubled start to the Nations League following a fantastic World Cup, including a blunder in a previous loss to Portugal, while Selvik has played every league match for Stade Brestois. Solbakken noted that Nyland took the news well and was glad for the honesty, having understood that he would not play all four games on this international break.
Squad Logistics and the Upcoming Match in Porto
Norway enters Sunday’s fixture at the Estadio do Dragao in Porto facing an uphill battle in the Nations League. Portugal currently tops the group with nine points, while Norway, Wales, and Denmark trail with three points each after three matches. Adding to Solbakken’s roster challenges ahead of the trip to Portugal, defender Torbjorn Heggem will miss the fixture due to a suspension stemming from his red card against Wales, while Julian Ryerson is returning home to his club because of an injury. It remained unconfirmed whether Nyland would depart the squad early or travel with the team to Portugal.
