Rhine Bank Filtration and Deep Groundwater
Operating continuously for more than 160 years, Stadtwerke Düsseldorf utilizes a distinct sourcing model to maintain supply stability. Data from the utility shows that approximately 75 percent of the region’s drinking water originates from Rhine bank filtration. The remaining 25 percent comes from groundwater reserves.
The filtration process relies on river water percolating through the riverbed and traveling via underground passages to the facility extraction wells. Because the extraction pumps sit at significant depths within the production wells, fluctuating river levels do not disrupt raw water availability during seasonal droughts.
The 20 Million Euro Gerresheim Reservoir Project
To future-proof the regional network against growing populations and extreme weather, utility leadership is deploying capital into extensive modernization programs. Stadtwerke Düsseldorf is currently constructing a new drinking water storage reservoir in the Gerresheim forest area with a total budget of 20 million euros.
This modern facility will replace a predecessor that is more than 100 years old. It will work alongside existing high-level storage tanks to safeguard the municipal supply for approximately 800,000 residents across Düsseldorf, Mettmann, and Erkrath.
