Springfield Boys Soccer Defeats Bowling Green 4-1 to Extend Undefeated NLL Run

Early First-Half Barrage Secures Advantage for Springfield

Springfield established control early during the Tuesday matchup in Bowling Green. Three goals in under five minutes during the first half pushed the Blue Devils ahead comfortably with 13:55 remaining until the break. Midfielder Will Browning opened the scoring for the visitors. Forwards Denny Rakosik and Cal Kurdziel quickly followed with goals to extend the advantage. Defender Aiden Foos capped the scoring with a fourth goal in the second half.

The win keeps Springfield at the top of the Northern Lakes League Cardinal Division standings with a 9-1-2 overall record and a 5-0-1 mark in divisional play. The team is pursuing a fourth-straight NLL Cardinal Division title, building on a streak that began in 2023 and a regional final appearance in 2025. Outside of a season-opening loss to Southview, the Blue Devils have maintained an 11-match unbeaten run, which includes seven clean sheets.

“When we played them earlier this year, they did the same thing. They defend really well. Coach Hall has done a great job with those guys, keeping them organized,” Springfield coach Adam Sloan said regarding Bowling Green’s defensive setup. “For myself and for us, the message was about just being patient. Breaking down teams, having the ball a lot, and having to defend those little moments of counterattacking can become mentally wearing, so you just have to stay disciplined.”

Bowling Green Responds Despite Roster Youth and Defensive Pressure

Bowling Green dropped to 5-5-2 overall and 2-3-2 in divisional play following the loss. The Bobcats denied Springfield another shutout when defender Carter Hamilton found the net midway through the second half. First-year Bowling Green coach Jerod Hall leads a young varsity roster that features only three seniors.

Despite the decisive five-minute stretch in the first half where Springfield secured its lead, Hall expressed pride in his team’s second-half response. The Bobcats attempted to weather lengthy stretches of possession while looking for opportunities on the counterattack.

“The constants from game to game should be your effort, toughness, and mental strength,” Hall said. “Those things, we stress, have to be at a constant high level. I think the boys have bought into that, and they’ve tried to bring that. It’s allowed us to get a few results that maybe were in the balance, it kept us in some games that maybe people thought we weren’t going to be competitive in. I think tonight was an example of when you don’t bring that, this division and that team in particular will punish you.”

Defensive Standards and Ongoing Schedules Across the Division

Springfield returned 16 varsity players from the previous season, allowing the squad to maintain strict communication and tactical awareness on the pitch. Defender Aiden Foos highlighted the team’s preparation methods ahead of divisional matches.

“The most important thing for us is the communication at the back end,” Foos said. “We make sure guys are marked at all times, and do our homework before each game to see who their main guy is. If we’re able to do that, they’re not able to do much offensively. One of the things Coach Sloan has done really well in his eight years coaching varsity is instilling a culture in us, where we’re able to have fun at practices, but still work hard and keep a high standard on any day.”

Both programs maintained demanding game schedules following the contest. According to MaxPreps coverage of the matchup series, Bowling Green previously secured a 2-0 win over Springfield in an earlier meeting, marking a prior five-game win streak in head-to-head play for the Bobcats. Following Tuesday’s match, Bowling Green notched an 8-0 victory against Napoleon, while Springfield rebounded with a 5-1 win against Ross to continue their respective autumn campaigns.
