Sports Industry News: Northampton Saints, Harry Potter Star and LTA Partnerships
Northampton Saints and Loughborough Lightning have secured a multi-year legal partnership with UK law firm Shoosmiths for the 2026/27 season and beyond, uniting elite rugby operations with regional commercial backing. The agreement places Shoosmiths branding across both men’s and women’s playing and warm-up kits, marking a deeper commercial integration for the women’s PWR campaign.
Commercial Evolution and Regional Roots
The new arrangement reconnects Shoosmiths with its historical Northampton roots. According to club and firm disclosures, Shoosmiths was founded close to Franklin’s Gardens prior to the establishment of Northampton Saints in 1880, while two sons of founder William Shoosmith later represented the club on the pitch.
Following the lifting of Law Society restrictions on advertising, Shoosmiths made history in 1986 by becoming the initial law firm to back a rugby fixture as Northampton welcomed Irish opponents Bective Rangers.
David Jackson, CEO of Shoosmiths, noted the operational alignment between legal preparation and athletic execution. Elite performance starts well before kick-off, according to Jackson, reflecting the foundational work lawyers provide for corporate clients. Julia Chapman, Chief Executive of Northampton Saints, added that the partnership aligns two entities with established profiles and ambitions extending beyond the national stage.
Expanding Global Footprints in Alternative Formats
Actor Oliver Phelps, best known for playing George Weasley in the Harry Potter film series, has taken an ownership stake in the Atlantic Novas franchise within the Ultimate Sevens competition.
Ultimate Sevens features six men’s and six women’s teams utilizing a modified 10-minute match format without half-time, alongside unlimited substitutions and a 90-second coach-led timeout. The Atlantic Novas women’s team won the opening Cardiff event, while the inaugural championship concludes at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium in London on September 24.
Phelps stated that the fast-paced nature of the format and its focus on gender equity drew him to the investment. The competition has bolstered its commercial distribution through a near-global free-to-view media rights agreement with DAZN, supported by territory partnerships with Stan Sport, Sky, and Fiji TV, alongside streaming on YouTube and activation partnerships with TikTok.
Infrastructure Growth in British Padel
In racket sports, CUPRA has expanded its footprint through a multi-year partnership with LTA Padel, securing title rights to the CUPRA LTA Padel National League, the LTA Padel British Tour, and the National Championships. The brand will also feature on the kits of Great Britain’s national padel teams during international competition.
According to LTA figures, domestic padel participation has reached one million players, a substantial rise from 15,000 in 2019, supported by an expanding infrastructure network comprising 1,825 courts across 551 venues. Marcus Gossen, Managing Director of SEAT and CUPRA UK, cited the sport’s rapid growth as the driver for the automotive brand’s continued investment.
Supporter-Driven Merchandise for European Returns
In professional football, Sunderland AFC has commemorated its return to European competition for the first time in 53 years by utilizing the recorded heartbeats of supporters in a new merchandise range. On May 24, as Sunderland clinched their spot in the UEFA Europa League during the final fixtures of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign, the club recorded these supporter heartbeats inside the Stadium of Light.

Scott McCubbin, Chief Commercial Officer at Sunderland AFC, noted that the heartbeat design captures the emotional weight of qualification day. The collection includes a warm-up jersey, quarter-zip jacket, and shower-proof jacket featuring a modern interpretation of a heartbeat graph. Each garment carries the interior neck inscription: “24 May 2026. European qualification confirmed. One day, someone will ask you what it felt like. Show them this.” Pre-orders open on September 15, with adult items priced from £40 and children’s items from £35.
