Global Renewable Energy Growth Surges as Fossil Fuel Costs Rise
New data reveals that renewable energy capacity additions reached record levels in 2023, with solar and wind power leading the expansion. According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), global renewable energy installations grew by 300 gigawatts (GW) last year, marking the largest annual increase ever recorded.
Solar power accounted for nearly 60% of all new installations, with China alone responsible for 250 GW of the total growth. The country’s aggressive deployment of photovoltaic panels has solidified its position as the world’s largest solar market.

“The transition to renewables is accelerating faster than ever before,” said Francesco La Camera, Director-General of IRENA. “We are seeing unprecedented levels of investment and deployment, particularly in emerging economies where energy demand is growing rapidly.”
“The cost of solar and wind energy has dropped by over 80% in the past decade, making them the cheapest energy sources in most regions.”
In Europe, wind energy installations increased by 20 GW in 2023, with Germany and Spain leading the charge. The continent’s shift away from Russian gas has further boosted demand for domestic renewable sources.
Despite these gains, challenges remain. The International Energy Agency (IEA) warns that current growth rates are still insufficient to meet the Paris Agreement targets. “We need to triple renewable energy deployment by 2030 to keep global warming below 1.5°C,” said Fatih Birol, Executive Director of the IEA.
“The energy transition is not just about technology—it’s about policy, finance, and public support. Governments must create the right conditions for this transformation to succeed.”
Looking ahead, analysts predict that renewable energy could supply over 60% of global electricity by 2035, up from about 30% today. Battery storage advancements and grid modernization are expected to play key roles in this transition.
