The Venezuelan Superliga Profesional de Baloncesto (SPB) will begin its 2026 season with 13 teams after Frontinos del Táchira withdrew from the competition just days before the scheduled tip-off on March 7th, according to a statement released by the league.

The SPB’s Board of Directors cited “recent events of public knowledge” as the reason for Frontinos’ inability to participate, forcing a restructuring of the competition format and calendar. The league indicated that a revised schedule will be published through its digital channels in the coming hours.

Frontinos del Táchira was slated to open the season against Trotamundos de Carabobo on March 7th at the Fórum de Valencia. Their departure leaves a void in the Western Conference, which now consists of Brillantes del Zulia, Cocodrilos de Caracas, Gaiteros del Zulia, Héroes de Falcón, Pioneros del Ávila, and Trotamundos de Carabobo.

The Eastern Conference will proceed with seven teams: Marinos de Anzoátegui, Centauros de Bolívar, Diablos de Miranda, Guaiqueríes de Margarita, Panteras de Miranda, Piratas de La Guaira, and Spartans del Distrito Capital.

The SPB reaffirmed its commitment to Venezuelan basketball and its fans, stating it is confident the adjusted format will maintain the league’s competitive spirit. The league also noted that fans will be able to watch games on Meridiano Televisión and Meridiano.net, beginning March 7th. A special SPB 2026 edition will be published by the Meridiano newspaper on March 5th, providing comprehensive coverage of the 14 teams originally scheduled to compete.

The 2026 season will follow a format of two conferences, with each team playing 24 regular-season games against opponents within their geographic zone – two games at home and two away.
