by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Powerful Storm Gabrielle Threatens Widespread Flooding Across spain

Spain is bracing for notable disruption as ex-tropical storm Gabrielle brings torrential rainfall and the risk of severe flooding to large swathes of the country, beginning this weekend and intensifying early next week. The storm, which developed into a powerful system, is forecast to deliver exceptionally high precipitation, particularly to the Valencia region, with potential rainfall rates exceeding 200 liters per hour in some areas, and potentially reaching 250 liters.

The storm is tracking across Spain from west to east, drawing in a humid air flow that will trigger intense showers along the Mediterranean coast. Meteored reports a 70 percent chance of sudden flooding, especially in low-lying areas and normally dry riverbeds. Beyond Valencia, the regions of Galicia, the Costa del Sol, areas around Gibraltar, and the Balearic islands are also under threat from heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Spain’s national whether service, Aemet, stresses this is a multi-day event, with the potential for exceptionally high rainfall increasing the risk of rivers overflowing and urban drainage systems becoming overwhelmed.Aemet advises residents and visitors to avoid travel in affected regions and exercise extreme caution on the roads. Those living in flood-prone areas are urged to remain vigilant and closely monitor alerts issued by local authorities.
