Spain Braces for Severe Weekend Storms and Sharp Temperature Drop

August 22, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a nationwide alert for a sharp transition in weather conditions, forecasting intense thunderstorms, potential large hail, and a significant drop in temperatures across the northern and eastern regions of the country. This shift, driven by an upper-level cold air mass, replaces prolonged summer heat with conditions more typical of a seasonal transition.

Atmospheric Instability and the Arrival of Polar Air

Beginning August 22, 2026, the arrival of a polar air mass will trigger a widespread thermal collapse. According to AEMET, temperatures are expected to drop by up to 10 degrees Celsius compared to the start of the week, with maximums falling below 30 degrees in many areas. This transition marks the end of a persistent period of subtropical air that had previously sustained high temperatures across the Iberian Peninsula.

The meteorological catalyst for this change is a DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels), which is interacting with an Atlantic trough. This combination is generating significant instability, particularly in the northern, central, and eastern sectors of the country. As this system moves, it is expected to produce heavy rainfall, which may lead to local flooding, as well as high-intensity wind gusts that some reports characterize as nearly hurricane-force in isolated locations.

Regional Impact and Infrastructure Risks

The most severe weather is anticipated in the northeastern quadrant of the peninsula, including parts of Catalonia, Aragon, the northern Valencian Community, and the central Pyrenees.

The Evolution of the Weekend Forecast

While the initial onset of the storm system began to manifest on Friday, August 21, the instability is projected to intensify through Saturday, August 22. AEMET forecasts that Saturday will be the day of greatest atmospheric adversity, characterized by both the geographic spread of the storms and the magnitude of the temperature decrease.

By Sunday, August 23, while some uncertainty remains regarding the exact path of the cold air mass, the forecast continues to indicate persistent rain in the northeast and the Levante region. Portals such as Eltiempo.es suggest that a cold low-pressure system may approach western Galicia, potentially extending precipitation into the western Cantabrian coast.

Legal and Financial Considerations for Stakeholders

A Shifting Climate Baseline

The transition from mid-week temperatures nearing 40 degrees to the current cooling trend illustrates the volatility currently affecting regional climate patterns.

The instability is not expected to vanish immediately upon the start of the new week. AEMET has indicated that while the exact intensity for Monday, August 24, remains subject to change, the northeast remains a focal point for continued monitoring.
