SpaceX has expressed doubt about the commercial viability of its planned space-based data centers for artificial intelligence, according to an internal financial document reviewed by Zonebourse. The document, circulated among investors, questions whether revenue from orbital computing facilities will sufficiently offset the high costs of launching, operating, and maintaining such infrastructure in low Earth orbit.

The assessment comes as SpaceX advances development of its Starlink satellite constellation, which currently provides broadband internet services to consumers, businesses, and government agencies worldwide. Company officials have previously described space-based data processing as a natural extension of Starlink’s capabilities, particularly for latency-sensitive AI workloads that could benefit from proximity to orbital sensors and imaging platforms.

However, the financial review highlights significant technical and economic hurdles, including the need for radiation-hardened hardware, reliable power generation in orbit, and secure, high-bandwidth laser links between satellites and ground stations.
