S&P 500 Falls as AI Worries Hit Software Makers

September 9, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

S&P 500 Falls as AI Worries Hit Software Makers Amid Middle East Conflict

The S&P 500 ended lower on Sept 8, dropping 44.66 points, or 0.58 per cent, to close at 7,673.94 points, driven down by software sector losses and ongoing macroeconomic pressures, according to preliminary data reported by Reuters. The decline was heavily influenced by losses among major software makers following recent artificial intelligence releases, alongside rising oil prices stemming from Middle East hostilities and shifting expectations regarding upcoming US interest rate decisions.

The Tech TL;DR:

  • Market Movement: The S&P 500 software and services index fell 1.4 per cent, marking its second straight day of declines.
  • Catalyst: OpenAI’s launch of GPT-6 Astra reignited enterprise software disruption fears, pressuring specialized vendors like Salesforce and ServiceNow.
  • Macro Factors: Traders adjusted expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike while oil prices hit a six-week high following attacks on energy facilities.

AI Disruption Fears Hammer Enterprise Software Stocks

Specialized software providers faced sustained downward pressure on the market as investors reassessed the competitive moat of legacy enterprise platforms. Salesforce shares, ServiceNow, and Intuit declined, with Salesforce and Intuit dropping about 4 per cent and ServiceNow losing 5 per cent, according to Reuters market data. The catalyst behind the sell-off was OpenAI’s launch of its newest model, GPT-6 Astra, which reignited speculation that advanced AI capabilities could directly compete with services currently offered by specialized software companies.

This market reaction dragged the S&P 500 software and services index down by 1.4 per cent, extending its losing streak to a second day. Jed Ellerbroek, portfolio manager at Argent Capital Management, noted via Reuters that “Astra has kind of reignited the software disruption fears and it’s resumed that old trend that we got used to for a while, where semiconductor stocks and data centre capex beneficiaries do well, while software stocks do poorly.” While software equities struggled, hardware infrastructure gained ground; Intel jumped 9 per cent and Qualcomm rose 3.2 per cent after striking a deal with Amazon to develop custom AI chips.

Macroeconomic Headwinds: Fed Rate Hike Bets and Middle East Conflict

Beyond sector-specific software jitters, broader economic indicators shaped trading sessions on Sept 8. Traders increased bets on an interest rate hike at the US Federal Reserve’s upcoming Sept 15-16 meeting after the Labor Department reported that employers added far more positions than expected in August. According to the CME FedWatch tool cited by Reuters, traders saw a 60 per cent chance of an increase in interest rates. Policymakers are closely monitoring upcoming producer and consumer price reports for further evidence that inflation pressures are continuing to cool.

Concurrently, geopolitical tensions remained a significant overhang on global equities. Following strikes by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis on Saudi energy facilities that ignited petroleum installations and heightened the threat of a wider conflict in the six-month-old Middle East war, oil prices climbed to a peak not seen in six weeks on Sept 8. Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz slowed following threats from Iran. Jeff DerGurahian, chief investment officer at loanDepot, stated via Reuters that “the conflict between the United States and Iran is beginning to look less like a temporary disruption and more like a longer-term backdrop for markets.” As energy costs fluctuated and enterprise IT budgets faced scrutiny, corporate technology leaders increasingly partnered with enterprise IT resilience consultants to insulate infrastructure operations from macro volatility.

Broader Index Performance and Valuation Adjustments

The broader market indices mirrored the downward trend on Sept 8. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 83.30 points, equivalent to 0.31 per cent, to finish the session at 26,423.69, whereas the Dow Jones Industrial Average retreated 617.15 points, or 1.16 per cent, closing out at 52,797.10. Apple shares fell 1.2 per cent ahead of an anticipated product event under new chief executive officer John Ternus. Meanwhile, crypto stocks retreated alongside bitcoin dropping from US$80,000, with Coinbase and Strategy both losing ground.

Despite these sessions losses, the S&P 500 maintained a gain of about 12 per cent for 2026, sitting approximately 1 per cent below its record-high close set on Aug 13. According to LSEG data cited in market reports, the benchmark stock index is currently valued at 19 times expected earnings, down from 21 in early June. This lower valuation reflects increased earnings expectations following a strong second-quarter reporting season, even as elevated yields on risk-free US Treasuries make it less attractive for investors to absorb the added risk of equities.
