Soviet Union Wins 1987 European Junior Hockey Championship

February 12, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

The Soviet Union secured the gold medal at the 1987 European Junior Hockey Championship, held in Tampere, Finland, confirming the continued dominance of Eastern European nations in the competition. The tournament, for players under 18, is a key event for identifying emerging talent on the continent.

The Soviet team’s victory was attributed to a disciplined tactical approach, strong collective play, and technical skill, reinforcing a tradition of excellence in junior player development. This win further solidified Soviet hegemony in the junior ranks throughout the 1980s.

Czechoslovakia finished in second place, demonstrating the strength of its hockey program, known for its coaching and player technique. Finland took the bronze medal, signaling a growing presence for Nordic hockey as a competitive force against established powers.

The final standings saw Sweden crowned champions, edging out the Soviet Union and Czechoslovakia in a tight race. Sweden secured the title based on goal differential (+2) in head-to-head matchups with the two other leading teams. Czechoslovakia claimed the silver medal by virtue of having scored more goals in their games against the Soviet Union and Sweden – six to four.

The tournament featured a round-robin format with teams from across Europe. Notable results included a 13-3 victory for Czechoslovakia over Switzerland, an 11-1 win for the Soviet Union against Poland, and a 9-0 shutout for Finland over Norway. Finland defeated the Soviet Union 6-5 in a closely contested match.

Germany finished last in the Group A standings with only one point, suffering defeats in all but one of their matches. Switzerland finished in fifth place, while Poland and Norway occupied the sixth and seventh positions respectively.

The 1987 championship was the latest in a series of European Junior Hockey Championships that began in 1968, with the competition continuing until 1998.
