Southwest Overhauls Rewards with New Tiers, ad-hoc-news.de reports
Southwest Airlines is overhauling its Rapid Rewards loyalty program by replacing legacy tiers with new Silver, Gold, and Platinum levels starting January 1, 2027, ad-hoc-news.de reported. The Dallas-based carrier aims to lock in high-spending flyers and capture greater revenue from its customer base by restructuring elite benefits and introducing milestone rewards.
Tier Restructuring and Companion Pass Changes
The airline is retiring its previous “A-List” and “A-List Preferred” designations. Under the new framework effective January 1, 2027, A-List becomes Silver and A-List Preferred becomes Gold, while a brand-new Platinum tier enters the lineup. Platinum members secure unbegraded companion pass travel, alongside priority boarding sequences where Platinum flyers board first, followed by Gold, and Silver members entering in group 1, ad-hoc-news.de reported.
Milestone rewards accompany the structural shift. Members who amass 20,000 points or complete 15 qualifying flights can select perks such as 2,000 bonus points or vouchers for preferred seating. Three Companion Pass trips become available at 95,000 points or 75 flights, dropping below the Platinum threshold. Previously, securing the pass required at least 135,000 points or 100 flights.
Tony Roach explained that boarding groups A, B, and C no longer exist, making a refresh necessary.
Chase Card Spending Earns Status Points from 2027
Chase Rapid Rewards cardholders will accumulate one status-qualifying point per dollar spent starting in 2027, which includes the Plus card, connecting card spending directly to status progression.
Additional operational updates roll out ahead of the tier changes. Car rentals become bookable with points starting in November 2026. Later in 2027, members will be permitted to spend points on seat selection, including seats featuring extra legroom. The airline also plans to establish airport lounges under the name Icon in four US cities by late 2027 in partnership with Chase, requiring a new premium credit card for entry. In the fall of 2027, Southwest intends to complete the installation of Starlink Wi-Fi across its entire fleet.
Broader Industry Alignment
The strategic adjustments follow the discontinuation of free checked baggage and open seating, aligning Southwest more closely with traditional carrier models. Market observers view the loyalty program overhaul as an extension of this commercial shift. Other major carriers are simultaneously tightening program requirements, as evidenced by United raising the hurdles for its Premier 1K elite status to 32,000 points.
