Coast path Reopens After Landslide Repairs
Popular walking route restored near Weymouth’s Fleet Lagoon.
Hikers rejoice! A scenic section of the South West Coast Path, a favorite among locals and tourists alike, has reopened following extensive repairs after being closed in 2023 due to coastal erosion and landslides.
Restoration Details
The path’s closure forced walkers onto a less desirable inland route. Now, thanks to collaborative efforts, the coastal path is accessible once more. The project involved installing 20 meters of gabion walling to stabilize the area near Chesil Beach Holiday Park.
A new terrace was added below the walling to create the restored footpath. Furthermore, native coastal wildflowers have been planted to attract pollinators and wildlife, enhancing the area’s biodiversity.
Protecting the Environment
These improvements not only restore access but also protect the sensitive habitats of the Fleet, which is designated as both a RAMSAR site and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). by guiding walkers along the path, the restoration helps prevent damage to this ecologically fragile area.
