South Korean Satellite Danuri Spots SpaceX Falcon 9 Lunar Impact Site

The South Korean space agency has captured the first before-and-after imagery of a spent SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket upper stage crashing into the lunar surface. According to the Korean Aerospace Administration (KASA), the Danuri lunar orbiter photographed the impact site on August 6, 2026, shortly after the predicted collision occurred on August 5. The upper stage had originally been deployed in 2025 to send Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost Mission 1 and ispace’s RESILIENCE toward the Moon.

Isaacman noted that “The reality is that meteoroids strike the lunar surface hourly, with impacts comparable to this upper stage occurring roughly every six days.”

Speaking to tech publication The Register in June 2026, Neuraspace boss Chiara Manfletti outlined strategies for managing surging lunar traffic. Manfletti’s proposals include enforcing stakeholder requirements to designate specific dumping grounds on the Moon to prevent chaotic debris fields.
