South Korea Starts Selection Process for Public Prosecution Office Head

South Korea Starts Selection Process for Public Prosecution Office Head

October 13, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

The South Korean Ministry of Justice has officially commenced the selection process for the inaugural head of the newly established public prosecution office, marking a significant administrative shift 15 months after the retirement of former Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung. Moon Moo-il, who served as Prosecutor General during the Moon Jae-in administration, has been appointed to chair the committee. The recommendation committee structure includes both ex-officio and appointed members. The ex-officio contingent consists of Ki Woo-jong, Deputy Minister of the National Court Administration; Kim Jung-wook, President of the Korean Bar Association; Choi Bong-kyung, President of the Korea Association of Law Schools; Kim Hyun-soo, Chairperson of the Korea Law School Association; and Lee Eung-cheol, Director of the Criminal Justice Bureau at the Ministry of Justice. Beyond these institutional representatives, the committee includes non-ex-officio members: Chairperson Moon, Yeo Jeong-seong, former Vice President of Seoul National University; Sim Seok-tae, a specially appointed professor at Semyung University; and Baek Myung-jae, head of the Seoul Western Smile Center. The formal selection timeline begins October 14 and concludes October 21. During this window, the public may recommend candidates who possess at least 15 years of legal experience. Recommendations must be submitted in writing to the Minister of Justice, with the specific justification for the candidate clearly stated. Under current regulations, submissions via fax or email are not permitted. Lee Jin-su, currently serving as the acting Minister of Justice, will review the recommendations and present a curated list of candidates to the committee. The committee is tasked with vetting these individuals and recommending at least three candidates to the Minister. The Minister then selects one for recommendation to the President. Following this, the candidate will undergo a National Assembly confirmation hearing before final appointment, provided there are no disqualifying factors. Observers suggest that the launch of this selection process may accelerate the timeline for filling the vacant Minister of Justice position, which has remained open since the departure of Representative Kim Seung-won.
