South Korea exports surpass $900 billion for first time in history
South Korea’s cumulative exports surpassed $900 billion for the first time in history between January and October 2026, driven by soaring global demand for semiconductors and server infrastructure. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced that October exports reached $115.3 billion, securing the second-highest monthly total on record and bringing the yearly total within striking distance of the $1 trillion milestone.
Semiconductor Exports Drive October Trade Surge
October exports rose 93.7% compared to the same month last year, hitting $115.28 billion. This follows a strong September performance that also topped the $110 billion threshold. Total exports for the first ten months of the year reached $930 billion, marking a 60.6% increase over the previous year. Just $70 billion remains to clear the $1 trillion threshold before the end of November.
Global artificial intelligence investments fueled massive gains across key technology sectors. Semiconductor exports surged 259.4% to $56.44 billion due to intense demand from global big tech corporations. Computer shipments jumped 496.6% to $5.85 billion, supported by expanding server infrastructure and solid-state drive requirements. Autos, cosmetics, and bio-health sectors also posted measurable gains.
| Export Category | October 2026 Value | Year-over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| Semiconductors | $56.44 billion | +259.4% |
| Computers & Servers | $5.85 billion | +496.6% |
| Automobiles | $6.55 billion | +18.1% |
| Cosmetics | $1.44 billion | +57.5% |
| Bio-Health | $1.53 billion | +30.2% |
Geographic Shifts in Trade Destinations
Growth spread broadly across major overseas markets, with increases recorded in seven of South Korea’s nine primary export destinations. Exports to China reached $26.98 billion, a 133.6% increase. Shipments to the United States grew 185.8% to $24.9 billion. Sales to ASEAN nations climbed 128% to $21.33 billion, marking the second month exceeding $20 billion.
Imports rose 36% to $72.78 billion, leaving a monthly trade surplus of $42.5 billion. The cumulative trade surplus for the first ten months reached $294.9 billion, representing an increase of $239.1 billion over the same period last year.

Policy Focus on Small and Medium Enterprises
Kim Jeong-gwan, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, stated that as exports grew by over $110 billion in October, the achievement of $1 trillion in annual exports within November is becoming certain. He added that the government will concentrate its policy capabilities on strengthening trade cooperation with major countries and actively resolving export bottlenecks so that small and medium-sized enterprises can widely enjoy the fruits of export growth.
Officials Target November for Trillion Dollar Milestone
Government officials have pointed to November as the definitive window for clearing the $1 trillion annual export milestone.
