South Korea Deploys Hyunmoo-5 Ballistic Missile to Frontline Units

South Korea has initiated the deployment of its Hyunmoo-5 surface-to-surface ballistic missile to military units stationed along the border with North Korea. This move confirms the operational readiness of the nation’s most powerful conventional strike weapon, designed to deter potential aggression.

Military officials revealed the deployment began in late 2025. The Hyunmoo-5 substantially enhances South Korea’s ability to respond to threats. It’s a key component of Seoul’s strategy to maintain a strong defense posture. Reuters reported on the initial deployment plans earlier this year.

The Hyunmoo-5 boasts an estimated range of 300 kilometers (186 miles) and carries a substantial payload. This capability allows it to precisely target key military installations and command centers. Defense News details the missile’s technical specifications and testing history.

This deployment follows a series of North Korean missile tests and escalating rhetoric. South Korea views the Hyunmoo-5 as a crucial deterrent against further provocations. The missile’s introduction into frontline units signals a clear message to Pyongyang.

“The Hyunmoo-5 is not just about firepower; it’s about demonstrating our resolve,” stated a South Korean defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity. “It shows we are prepared to defend our nation against any threat.”

South Korea continues to strengthen its alliance with the United States, conducting joint military exercises and sharing intelligence. These efforts aim to maintain stability in the region and deter North Korean aggression. Stars and Stripes provides ongoing coverage of the U.S.-South Korea military partnership.

The deployment of the Hyunmoo-5 is expected to continue throughout 2026, with more units receiving the missile system. South Korea remains committed to peaceful resolution but will maintain a robust defense capability to protect its national interests.
