South Korea Declares Geoje and Tongyeong Special Disaster Zones After Heavy Rains

August 21, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

<>

The South Korean administration officially designated Geoje and Tongyeong as special disaster zones following severe torrential rainfall and flooding that crippled regional infrastructure.

Special Disaster Zone Designation Triggers National Relief

The presidential designation targets the hardest-hit southern coastal municipalities, where persistent downpours triggered landslides, structural collapses, and severe inundation.

Recovery operations face steep logistical hurdles, particularly across outlying island communities where heavy machinery cannot easily be deployed. Municipal authorities note that repairing compromised embankments and clearing blocked drainage systems in these remote areas requires intensive manual labor amidst unseasonably high summer temperatures.

Mobilization of Civil Defense and Volunteer Forces

To overcome equipment shortages on the ground, large-scale volunteer networks have mobilized across the affected districts.

Community support extends beyond immediate physical labor. Former President Moon Jae-in contributed 10 million won to relief efforts directed at his home region of Geoje, helping fund emergency supplies for displaced residents. These private contributions complement the ongoing deployment of municipal work crews tasked with restoring basic utilities.

Infrastructure Vulnerability and Long-Term Mitigation

Recovery is a long road for residents whose homes and businesses remain compromised by floodwaters and mudslides. While national funds provide the necessary fiscal foundation, the speed of normal life returning to Geoje and Tongyeong depends entirely on sustained coordination between deployed civil units, regional authorities, and specialized infrastructure contractors.
