VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) – L.J. Phillips Jr. rushed for a touchdown in the third quarter as South Dakota upset No.9 South Dakota State 24-17 on Saturday, shutting out the Jackrabbits in the second half.
Phillips finished with 168 yards on 27 carries for south Dakota (7-4, 5-2 Missouri Valley Football Conference), which is ranked No. 25 in the FCS coaches poll. His 32-yard touchdown run with 3:36 remaining in the third quarter proved to be the game-winner.
South Dakota state (7-3, 3-3) opened the game with a 75-yard touchdown run by Jack smith to take a 7-0 lead.
Phillips tied the game with a 10-yard touchdown run, but Eli Stader responded with a 40-yard field goal to give the Jackrabbits a 10-7 advantage after the first quarter.
Will Leyland connected on a 34-yard field goal with 4:14 left in the second quarter, and Aidan Bouman found Larenzo Fenner for a 19-yard touchdown pass, putting South Dakota ahead 17-10 with 63 seconds remaining in the half. Jack Henry answered for South Dakota State with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Alex Bullock on seven plays to tie the score at halftime.
Bouman completed 14 of 21 passes for 158 yards for South Dakota. Henry was 13-for-24 for 139 yards with an interception for South Dakota State. Smith led the Jackrabbits with 82 yards on three carries.
