South Carolina State University Shootings: 1 Dead, Classes Canceled

Orangeburg, S.C.‌ – South Carolina State University (SCSU) remains on lockdown and has canceled classes Monday following two seperate ​shootings Saturday that ‌left one guest⁤ dead and two others injured.

The first shooting occurred on⁢ campus, injuring a guest who was fleeing the scene, according to a university statement.Hours later, a​ second shooting⁢ injured ⁢another⁣ guest, who was ​initially taken to a local hospital before being airlifted​ to another facility where he remains hospitalized, the ‌south Carolina Law Enforcement division (SLED) confirmed.

Neither SLED nor the university has released the identities of the victims. SCSU President Alexander⁣ Conyers stated Sunday that no students were ⁢injured in either incident.

“The shootings are not ‍believed to​ be connected at this time, however, SLED’s investigations are​ active and ongoing,” SLED said in a statement.

The shootings took place after the university’s⁣ homecoming game, leading to the cancellation of⁤ Saturday night’s homecoming concert and all Sunday events.

“We​ extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the young woman who ⁣lost her life‍ and to all who have been⁢ affected,” Conyers said‌ in a statement. “We are cooperating fully with law enforcement as they investigate these senseless acts of⁤ violence.”

The campus is currently restricted to students, employees, and investigators and remains “secured on lockdown.” Counseling services are available to members of the SCSU community.

South carolina state University, a historically Black⁤ university, is located in ​Orangeburg, approximately 40 miles ‌south of Columbia.​

The investigation is ongoing.
