South carolina football is set to welcome back a familiar face. On Monday, multiple reports confirmed that the Gamecocks have secured a commitment from UCF transfer wide receiver DJ Black. 247Sports was the first to report the news.
Black, a former South Carolina signee, originally committed to the Gamecocks as part of the 2023 recruiting class but did not qualify academically. He then spent the 2023 season at UCF, where he appeared in 11 games and recorded 18 receptions for 272 yards and two touchdowns. ESPN’s profile of black details his stats from the 2023 season.
This transfer marks a second chance for Black to contribute to the Gamecocks’ offense. South Carolina is looking to bolster it’s receiving corps, and Black’s experience, even after a year at UCF, makes him a valuable addition. He will have three years of eligibility remaining.
“He’s a guy we really liked coming out of high school,” a source close to the program told The State. “He’s a talented player, and we’re glad he’s back in the fold.”
Black’s addition provides South Carolina head coach Shane Beamer with another weapon in the passing game as the team prepares for the upcoming 2024 season. The Gamecocks finished the 2023 season with a 5-7 record and are aiming for advancement in the SEC.
