Four Dead, Twenty Injured in South Carolina Bar Shooting
St. Helena Island, SC – A shooting at Willie’s Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island early Sunday left four people dead and at least 20 others injured, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities responded to a scene with a large crowd and multiple gunshot wound victims.
“Multiple victims and witnesses ran to the nearby businesses and properties seeking shelter from the gun shots,” the Sheriff’s Office stated on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Four of the injured are currently in critical condition at area hospitals. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
The shooting occurred at a bar known for serving authentic Gullah cuisine, located on St. Helena Island, a cultural center for the Gullah Geechee people - descendants of African slaves.
U.S. Representative Nancy Mace expressed her devastation on X, stating, “FULLY HEARTBROKEN to learn about the devastating shooting in Beaufort County. Our prayers are with the victims, their families, and everyone impacted by this horrific act of violence.”
The incident is under investigation. the Sheriff’s Office has asked for the public’s patience as they continue to gather information. This shooting adds to a growing number of mass shootings in the U.S.,defined by the Gun Violence Archive as incidents where four or more people are shot.
