Sørlandsbanen lamb – eight train sets taken out of operation

Sørlandsbanen Shuttered: Loose Windows Halt All Services

Passengers Stranded as Safety Concerns Ground Trains

All rail services on the Sørlandsbanen have been suspended today due to a critical safety issue: loose side windows discovered on multiple trains. This unexpected shutdown has caused significant disruption for travelers on the vital route.

Trains Pulled from Service

The problem first emerged Wednesday afternoon when a side window became loose on one of the southern line’s trains. Since then, three additional regional trains have been found to have similar faults. In response, eight train sets of type 73, which typically service the Stavanger to Oslo corridor, have been removed from operation.

Go-Ahead Apologizes, Seeks Solutions

“It’s just to regret the disadvantages this may cause for customers,”

Ole Andreas Skårland, Press Officer at Go-Ahead

Go-Ahead, the operator, is prioritizing passenger safety and continuously evaluating whether to extend the service halt. The company is actively working to arrange alternative transportation for those affected.

Ongoing Inspections and Uncertain Timelines

A night train of a different model is scheduled to depart from Stavanger to Kongsberg at 22:15 to accommodate some passengers. However, the full extent of the repairs remains unclear, as all windows on the affected trains will undergo thorough testing and necessary fixes.

This incident mirrors broader challenges in public transport infrastructure maintenance. For instance, in 2023, the UK’s rail network experienced delays equivalent to 3.7 million train hours, partly due to infrastructure failures and maintenance backlogs (Railway Technology, 2024).

Future Service Uncertain

The current assessment indicates that it is unknown how long the operational disruptions will persist. Go-Ahead stated they are working diligently to resolve the issue as swiftly as possible while upholding stringent safety standards.
