Sony PS5 Shipments Fall 35% While Gaming Division Profit Jumps 83%

November 8, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Sony delivered 2.6 million PlayStation 5 units in the July-to-September quarter, marking a 35 percent drop in hardware shipments compared to the same period a year earlier, boerse-express.com reported.

Sony’s quarterly shipments fell in the prior period, while rival Nintendo also faced declining sales for the Switch 2. Despite the shrinking hardware volume, Sony’s gaming division posted an 83 percent jump in operating profit to 220.1 billion yen for the quarter, according to boerse-express.com.

Adjusted for prior-year writedowns related to Bungie, the division’s operating profit rose 29 percent. PlayFront reported that revenue for the Games and Network Services segment grew 9 percent, underpinned by 88.2 million game sales. Network service revenue climbed 19.7 percent, while monthly active users reached 127 million in September with user playtime increasing 4 percent year-on-year.

Sony plans to fund its upcoming hardware cycle through current software momentum and active network monetization. Finanzchefin Lin Tao stated that the company expects fewer new console sales as the existing platform matures, according to XboxDynasty.

We want to further improve user engagement through the release of strong titles and the expansion of our service offering, and further strengthen monetization, Tao said, as reported by XboxDynasty.

PlayFront reported that development for the PlayStation 6 is proceeding on plan. Tao indicated during an investor call that heavy capital deployment toward the next hardware platform will begin in the fiscal year starting April 2027. Alinea Analytics analyst Rhys Elliott expects the PlayStation 5 to remain available on the market alongside its successor.

Component pricing continues to influence hardware strategy across the industry. Ampere Analysis reported that rising component expenses are putting pressure on manufacturing. For the full fiscal year ending in March 2027, Sony raised its forecast for the games division to 4.83 trillion yen in revenue and 700 billion yen in operating profit, as reported by boerse-express.com.
