Sony & Cannes: Supporting Emerging Filmmakers with New Short Film Prize

March 20, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Sony has announced a partnership with Critics’ Week at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, establishing the Sony Discovery Prize for Short Films. The initiative, revealed on March 19, 2026, underscores the company’s commitment to supporting emerging filmmakers and fostering innovation in short-form cinema.

The Sony Discovery Prize will award a €4,000 prize to the best short film selected by a jury on May 20, 2026. According to Sony, the prize aims to recognize creativity and experimentation within the short film format, providing both financial support and professional validation for up-and-coming talent.

Florence Quintin, Head of Film & Video Marketing, Sony Europe, stated that supporting Critics’ Week and the Discovery Prize is “a natural part of our commitment to encouraging young talent and unleashing the power of stories told through images.”

The partnership extends Sony’s long-standing dedication to empowering the creative community with technology designed for cinematographers. The company emphasized its goal of aligning technology with creativity, developing tools based on the needs of filmmakers, and supporting a recent generation of storytellers who are shaping global perspectives.

Critics’ Week, a parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival, is a key platform for showcasing new and emerging filmmakers. The Sony Discovery Prize aims to further amplify the visibility of these artists, offering international exposure and career opportunities.

Sony Corporation, through its Entertainment, Technology & Services (ET&S) business, plays a central role in shaping the future of entertainment. The company’s core values, Kando – evoking emotional experiences – and Anshin – providing trust and reassurance – are reflected in this initiative to support the next generation of filmmakers.
