Sonora Mom Finds Son’s Remains After Years-Long Search
Hermosillo, Sonora – After years of relentless searching, Ceci Flores Armenta has located remains believed to be those of her son, Marco Antonio Sauceda Rocha, who disappeared on May 4, 2019. The discovery occurred along Highway 26, at kilometer 46, near Hermosillo, according to statements from Flores and confirmed by the Sonora Prosecutor’s Office. However, the remains are not a complete body, consisting of scattered bones and fragments. Flores, a prominent figure in the “Madres Buscadoras de Sonora” collective, spearheaded the search efforts that led to the grim finding. She expressed both relief at locating something and profound sorrow that her son’s remains were not intact. “Vámonos a casa, hijo, de donde nunca tuviste que partir,” she said, according to reports, translating to “Let’s go home, son, from where you never should have had to leave.” The Sonora Prosecutor’s Office informed Flores that the remains discovered at the site correspond to her son, but emphasized that the identification is preliminary. Authorities found dispersed skeletal remains and bone fragments at the location. A search warrant was executed at the site, resulting in the seizure of bones and a piece of clothing, according to officials. Flores has requested DNA testing to definitively confirm the identity of the remains. She stressed the need for a swift and transparent process to obtain conclusive scientific evidence. “I don’t believe any mother should deserve to only collect the bones of her son, to embrace only bones,” she stated, expressing the emotional toll of the discovery. The search for Marco Antonio began in Bahía de Kino, a coastal area near Hermosillo. Flores’s tireless advocacy has extended beyond her own son’s case; she has assisted in locating over five thousand missing persons, many of whom were found alive in unexpected places such as prisons and rehabilitation centers. The discovery comes as Mexico continues to grapple with a severe crisis of disappearances. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s administration has faced increasing pressure to address the issue, and recently announced plans for a report on disappearances, potentially including meetings with mothers’ search groups and collectives. The Sonora Prosecutor’s Office anticipates receiving the results of the genetic analysis within two weeks, which will determine if the remains are indeed those of Marco Antonio Sauceda Rocha. The investigation remains ongoing.
