Sonic vs Godzilla: New Comic Crossover Announced

Sonic the Hedgehog will face off against Godzilla in a new comic book crossover event, IDW Publishing announced Friday. The six-issue miniseries, Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla, is slated to launch this summer, bringing together the iconic characters from Sega, and Toho.

The series will center on the unexpected arrival of Godzilla and other kaiju in Sonic’s world, prompting Dr. Eggman to attempt to harness their power. Sonic, along with allies Amy Rose, Tails, Knuckles the Echidna, and Shadow the Hedgehog, will attempt to repel the monsters and return them to their own dimension, according to IDW.

Nick Marino, known for his operate on Godzilla Rivals, is writing the series, with art by Jack Lawrence (Sonic the Hedgehog) and colors by Reggie Graham. The project has been in development for some time, with IDW noting that it had been a frequent request from fans. “IDW is constantly brainstorming new potential crossovers, and we’ve always been especially excited about the possibility of bringing these two iconic licenses together,” Sonic Editorial stated to IGN. “This crossover in particular is also one that fans have been asking us for loud and clear for years, so it’s been high up on the list to try to make happen.”

Marino drew inspiration from the Dreamcast game Sonic Adventure, specifically its urban hub world, Station Square, when envisioning the crossover. “If you’re dealing with giant monsters, you have to think bigger in scale,” Marino said, according to Bleeding Cool. “Station Square offered us an incredible canvas to litter with destruction and chaos.”

The crossover represents a significant collaboration between IDW Publishing, Sega, and Toho, the companies that own the respective franchises. IDW has been expanding its focus on the Godzilla line in recent years, making a partnership with Sonic a natural progression, according to the publisher.

The release date for the first issue of Sonic the Hedgehog X Godzilla has not yet been announced.
