Paramount Pictures has slated new release dates for films based on the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Sonic the Hedgehog” franchises, alongside plans to celebrate the 40th anniversary of “Top Gun.” An untitled “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” film is set for Nov. 17, 2028, and an untitled “Sonic Universe Event Film” will arrive on Dec. 22, 2028.
These announcements expand Paramount’s commitment to adapting popular intellectual property for the big screen, capitalizing on the established fanbases and box office potential of both franchises. The moves come as studios increasingly rely on known brands to drive theatrical attendance. Neal H. Moritz, producer of the triumphant “Sonic the Hedgehog” trilogy, will also produce the new “Ninja turtles” adventure.
The “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” film will be a family-pleasant live-action/CG animation hybrid featuring Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo. it marks a return to live-action for the characters after 2016’s “Out of the Shadows,” following the 2023 animated success “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, with a sequel, “Mutant Mayhem 2,” scheduled for Sept. 17, 2027.
The upcoming “Sonic” film is separate from “Sonic the Hedgehog 4,” which is slated for March 19, 2027. The “Sonic” franchise has proven highly profitable for Paramount, with the first three films collectively grossing over $1 billion worldwide.
Paramount will also re-release “Top Gun” in theaters on May 13, 2026, to commemorate the film’s 40th anniversary. The original 1986 film, starring Tom Cruise, earned $357.4 million and launched a blockbuster franchise, culminating in the 2022 sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick,” which became Paramount’s highest-grossing film ever with $1.49 billion.
