Sonia Gandhi’s arrival triggers seating scramble at INDIA bloc meeting

October 1, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Leaders of opposition parties from across the country gathered in New Delhi on Wednesday for a high-level meeting of the INDIA bloc. Discussions quickly turned to an unexpected seating scramble. Opposition parties used the summit to reiterate their demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, while the Bharatiya Janata Party criticized the gathering as political opportunism.

The meeting took place inside a pre-arranged venue featuring a large rectangular setup designed to ensure mutual respect among participating parties. According to sources within the coalition, seating tiers were designated to place current or former chief ministers and deputy chief ministers in the front row. Representatives of parties with fewer members of parliament sat further back.

A Sudden Arrival Disrupts Podium Protocols

Proceedings experienced a brief disruption when Congress leader Sonia Gandhi arrived unexpectedly just as the press conference was scheduled to begin. Sources stated that her arrival caught organizers off guard, leaving no designated nameplate for her on the podium.

Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee and NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule immediately began searching for an appropriate seat. While attendees gestured for Gandhi to take Rahul Gandhi’s designated chair, she instead chose the seat belonging to Rashtriya Janata Dal leader Tejashwi Yadav.

High-Stakes Front Row Realignment

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge then entered the hall and requested an adjustment to make space next to him. Mamata Banerjee ultimately seated herself beside Sonia Gandhi. Supriya Sule followed, accompanied by Samajwadi Party MP Harendra Malik.

On the opposite side of Kharge, Rahul Gandhi took his place. He was flanked by National Conference leader Omar Abdullah, CPM General Secretary MA Baby, CPI(ML) General Secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, Tejashwi Yadav, and Kapil Sibal.

A nameplate originally placed for P Chidambaram in the front row remained vacant as the senior Congress leader did not attend the event.

Briefing Accents and Leadership Gestures

During the briefing, Mamata Banerjee addressed the media with strong criticism directed at the ruling administration. This prompted an encouraging pat on the back from Sonia Gandhi.

Following the formal proceedings, the bloc renewed its push for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Meanwhile, the DMK, which previously distanced itself from the alliance due to differences with Congress, confirmed its support for an upcoming parliamentary impeachment motion against the election commissioner.
