Sondheim Foundation Grants Support Theatre Artists & Mental Health

March 22, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

NEW YORK CITY – The Stephen Sondheim Foundation has established the Horowitz-Sondheim Clinic at the New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute (NYPSI), honoring Sondheim’s longtime psychoanalyst, Dr. Milton Horowitz. The foundation will provide ongoing financial support to the clinic, offering affordable mental health services to playwrights, composers and lyricists, a commitment stemming from Sondheim’s own belief in the importance of psychoanalysis for creative individuals.

The initiative, announced March 19, 2026, is funded through royalties from Sondheim’s works and reflects a desire to destigmatize mental health challenges within the theater community, according to Dr. Tehela Nimroody, clinical director of the Treatment Center at NYPSI and director of the Horowitz-Sondheim Clinic. “Stephen Sondheim’s bequest is notable not only for the direct support it provides—allowing NYPSI to offer affordable treatment to theatre artists—but also because it sends a message destigmatizing the mental health challenges that many people face,” Dr. Nimroody stated.

Sondheim, widely regarded as a pivotal figure in 20th-century musical theater, frequently collaborated with Harold Prince and James Lapine, and his perform often explored complex and darker themes. He himself credited psychoanalysis with providing a crucial perspective on his creative process. As he once expressed, according to the NYPSI, “to find you’re not the only one in the world… Every time I would tell Milton something I’d expect him to be shocked and he’d say, ‘Yes…’ And after about five sessions I realized, He’s heard everything! And I’m just another ordinary neurotic fellow.”

Alongside the clinic’s creation, the Stephen Sondheim Foundation has awarded inaugural grants to four cultural institutions: the Playwrights’ Center of Minneapolis, the Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Millay Arts, and Rhinebeck Writers Retreat. These grants aim to support the development of new works and provide resources for artists, mirroring Sondheim’s commitment to mentoring emerging talent, a legacy he shared with his own mentor, Oscar Hammerstein II.

The Playwrights’ Center will utilize the grant to expand its Core Writer Fellowships, offering three-year terms of support to playwrights, including workshops and collaborative opportunities. “Playwrights’ Center is honored to be one of the inaugural recipients of this award. Stephen Sondheim’s legacy and commitment to the American theatre is unparalleled, and he was passionate about mentoring new writers,” said Playwrights Center producing artistic director Nicole A. Watson.

Steppenwolf Theatre Company will re-launch its SCOUT new play development program, which had been paused due to the financial impacts of the pandemic. The grant will fund a commission for an emerging playwright and support developmental workshops and public readings. Artistic directors Glenn Davis and Audrey Francis, and executive director Brooke Flanagan, stated the initiative will focus on launching new American plays by a diverse group of emerging playwrights.

Millay Arts will bolster its Core Residency program and a new “Artist in Residency” program, providing multidisciplinary artists with dedicated time and space for creative work. Millay Arts executive director Monika Burczyk noted the program’s impact, stating, “Our exceptional alumni repeatedly offer that their time in residence was transformative to their process and practice.”

Rhinebeck Writers Retreat will use the funding to support its summer Writing Residency program, offering stipends and uninterrupted time for musical theatre writing teams. Rhinebeck executive director Erica Rotstein emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “Sondheim modeled that writers need time to wrestle with character and story together. RWR exists to provide and protect that time.”

The Stephen Sondheim Foundation also made a one-time gift to the Entertainment Community Fund last year, as directed by Sondheim prior to his death in November 2021. The foundation’s ongoing efforts are dedicated to supporting playwrights, composers, and lyricists, particularly those in the early stages of their careers.
