Son of Former Soccer Player Fernando Navarro Dies at Age 5 After Liver disease battle
Emilio Navarro Canales, the 5-year-old son of former Mexican soccer player Fernando Navarro, has died after a months-long battle with a liver disease requiring an emergency transplant. The news was confirmed by Club León, Navarro’s former team, who extended their condolences to the family.
“club León deeply regrets the sensitive death of Emilio Navarro Canales, son of our dear friend Fernando navarro. We join in the grief that overwhelms all his relatives. Rest in peace, dear Emi,” the club stated, without disclosing the specific cause of death.
The tragedy unfolded after Emilio was hospitalized with critical liver failure. In August, Fernando Navarro launched a gofundme campaign to help cover the mounting medical expenses, aiming to raise 3 million pesos (approximately $150,000).
A message from Emilio himself, shared as part of the fundraising effort, read: “I’m Emilio, I’m 5 years old. I love to dance, swim and play with my brother Alonso. Today I am in intensive care: my liver stopped working and I need a transplant immediately.”
Following a accomplished transplant,Emilio remained hospitalized for recovery. The family shared an update 40 days post-transplant, stating, “I already have my new liver and 40 days later I am still in the hospital looking forward to recovering! Even though I have medical insurance, it has already reached its limit, the hospital expenses are enormous and exceed my family, my father Fernando Navarro has created this fund to be able to pay part of those extra expenses.” He added, ”Every second counts. Your donation can save my life and return me home to my family. Thank you for helping me continue dreaming.”
Just one day before his death was announced, Fernando Navarro publicly requested blood donors for his son. On October 25th, Navarro had initially reported a positive step in his son’s recovery, announcing Emilio’s discharge after 75 days in the hospital. He expressed his gratitude, stating, “After 75 days in the hospital, Emi has already been discharged, it is the first of two big steps towards her full recovery. Thank you all for your prayers, your good wishes, your good vibes and all your support. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
