Son Jailed After Fatal Push While Defending Father
A 25-year-old Singaporean man, Jovin Goh Jia Xuan, was sentenced to six weeks in jail on Tuesday after he pushed a 78-year-old man during a dispute, leading to the victim’s death. The incident, which occurred at a bus stop along Bedok North Avenue 3, resulted in the victim suffering a fatal head injury after falling backward onto the pavement.

According to court proceedings, the confrontation took place on the evening of August 18, 2023. The victim, 78-year-old Tan Quee Soi, was waiting at a bus stop when Jovin Goh and his father, 56-year-old Goh Chee Kiat, arrived. A verbal altercation broke out between the two parties, which escalated when the younger Goh intervened.
During the exchange, Jovin Goh pushed the victim. The force caused the elderly man to lose his balance and fall, striking his head against the concrete ground. Emergency services were notified, and the victim was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
### Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
Jovin Goh pleaded guilty to one charge of causing grievous hurt by performing a rash act that endangered the personal safety of others. The prosecution had sought a jail term, noting the severity of the consequences resulting from the defendant’s physical aggression.
In court, it was established that the defendant’s actions were a direct response to the interaction between his father and the victim. While the defense argued for leniency, citing the circumstances of the confrontation, the court emphasized the duty of individuals to exercise restraint, particularly when dealing with vulnerable members of the public.

Goh Chee Kiat, the father of the defendant, also faces legal action in connection with the incident. He has been charged with one count of voluntarily causing hurt.
