Somers Theater Program Shines with “Almost, Maine” Production
Somers High School’s fall production isn’t a football game, but the theater program is generating just as much excitement. What began as a brief promotional visit from News 12 on Friday unexpectedly blossomed into a live, two-minute segment showcasing the cast and crew’s dedication and community spirit.
The students are presenting John cariani’s 2004 play, “Almost, Maine,” a series of heartwarming and sometimes heartbreaking stories centered around love and loss in the uniquely named town of Almost. The production opens Friday evening, following an afternoon of final preparations.
During the impromptu live appearance, cast members expressed their passion for the project. “I think our cast has a really unique outlook,” said actress Fiona Sledzik. “We’re really passionate and we really care about the show – that’s hard to find in a high school production. Please come see it and it’s going to be an amazing show.”
The energetic segment featured the cast and crew dancing and singing, not as a preview of the play (which is not a musical), but as a way to build excitement for the weekend. Jenna Yager, the show’s audio technician, highlighted the strong bonds within the theater program. “The camaraderie…has made them all better actors and production technicians,” she explained.
The team is also keeping things light with a playful tradition: the “Paper Plate” award,a humorous gift to be presented to an underclassman at Saturday’s wrap party held at a local diner. “It’s mainly just to make fun and poke fun at everything that was going on during the production,” Yager said with a laugh.
Tickets for “Almost, Maine” are available for $8 and can be purchased for showings on Saturday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Don’t miss the chance to support Somers High School’s talented theater students!
