First Snowfall Reported in Five European Ski Villages
TIGNES LE LAC, FRANCE – Snow has begun to fall across several high-altitude European villages, signaling the start of the ski season. Recent snowfall was reported in Tignes Le Lac (2100m), Samnaun (1880m), and Val Thorens, among others, offering a preview of winter conditions to come.
The early snow, arriving as early as Wednesday in Tignes Le Lac and overnight in Samnaun, provides a boost to ski resorts preparing for opening days. While the accumulations are currently modest – a “small layer” in Samnaun and “thick flakes” in Tignes Le Lac – the precipitation is a positive indicator for snowpack growth. These initial conditions are closely watched by ski enthusiasts and the tourism industry, as reliable snow cover is crucial for a triumphant winter season. Forecasts suggest further snowfall is absolutely possible in some areas.
The first flakes were observed in the village of Val Thorens, with additional reports coming from Solden, Austria. In Samnaun, the snow created a light white covering, and sunny conditions are expected to give way to further snowfall. Tignes Le Lac experienced heavier snowfall on Wednesday, with thick flakes reported.
