Snooker: Crucible Theatre Deal Secures World Championship Until 2045 | BBC News

March 25, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

The World Snooker Championship will remain at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield until at least 2045, following a £45 million funding agreement that resolves concerns about a potential relocation to Saudi Arabia or China. The deal, announced Tuesday, includes plans for a significant refurbishment of the iconic venue, adding up to 500 seats and enhancing spectator facilities.

Doubts over the championship’s future had grown in recent months, with both Saudi Arabia and China reportedly expressing interest in hosting the event. These nations could have offered larger, more lucrative venues, prompting questions about the Crucible’s long-term viability. While, the agreement between World Snooker Tour and Sheffield City Council secures the tournament’s place in the northern English city for at least another two decades, with an option to extend the arrangement to 2050.

The majority of the redevelopment cost – £35 million – will be publicly funded, with an additional £10 million coming from private investment. Work is scheduled to begin after the 2028 tournament, necessitating a temporary relocation for that year’s championship. A location for the temporary move has not yet been announced.

Barry Hearn, president of Matchroom Sport, which promotes and runs snooker, praised the agreement. “I am so happy that after a long period of meetings and discussions we have finally agreed a deal to stage the World Championship at its historic home — the Crucible,” Hearn said in a statement. He also thanked Sheffield City Council for their efforts in securing the deal.

The Crucible has hosted the World Championship since 1977 and is widely considered the spiritual home of snooker. The current agreement between World Snooker Tour and Sheffield City Council was due to expire in 2027. The planned refurbishment aims to address concerns about the venue’s capacity and modernize its facilities, ensuring it remains a suitable host for the prestigious tournament.

World champion Zhao Xintong emphasized the importance of the Crucible, describing it as snooker’s “grandest stage.” The refurbishment is expected to boost potential revenue and prize money for players, solidifying the championship’s position within UK sports and culture.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was involved in discussions regarding the Crucible’s future, highlighting the event’s economic and cultural significance to Sheffield. The championships are estimated to bring millions of pounds to the local economy each year, and the city is home to numerous snooker academies and world-renowned players.
